I just completed my first single firing in my quirkly little gas kiln using Steven Hill glazes. This "odd" kiln fires cone 5 1/2 on the bottom and cone 9 on the top. I used Steven Hill's formulated glazes for cone 6 electric firing.... all turned out beautifully!! I also used John Britt glazes from his Ceramics Monthly article about using Turner White as a base in cone 6 to cone 10. I used John's orange recipe as my liner and modifier. ( really nice smooth glaze)
The firing took 11 hours, but I feel I can cut this to about 10 hours. |

I could not figure out why I was so attracted to a new glaze from the Steven Hill workshop. Then, the aha moment came!
It reminds me of a trip to Yellowstone. Try figuring out why you are attracted to your glazes. It makes a nice study to expand upon.

I just watched the new Steven Hill DVD. It is a wonderful overview of single firing, spraying of glazes, recipes, and forms. If you are unable to attend one of his workshops, watching the DVD will help you understand his technique. The DVD includes all of his current recipes ( if you see a recipe with 10% bentonite....it should be 1% bentonite)

I just got back from the Steven Hill workshop at John C Campbell Folk School. His technique of single firing, multiple sprayed glazes is amazing. We fired 8 electric kilns in one week!
For years, Steven's glazes were fired at cone 10 reduction. Since 2008, he has been firing reformulated glazes in an electric kiln with scheduled cool down.
These are a few of the mugs I made....cone 6 porcelain, fired in an electric kiln. The colors truly look like a reduction firing. I plan to single fire at cone 6 in my gas kiln...still using half and half clay.

Buon giorno ! Are you fascinated with the Italian culture , pottery, wine, food, language .......? Perhaps studying at La Meridiana in Tuscany is for you! Check out their website... http://www.lameridiana.fi.it/
I just registered to study there in 2012. This fabulous ceramic school attracts some of the best teachers in the world. Located in the center of Tuscany , in addition to instruction, there are side trips to vineyards, the Etruscan pottery museums, local potters, Italian dining, and Florence. |

The 25th Annual Potters Conference will be held in Asheboro, NC in March. Registration is limited to 150 people. This is a great way to meet potters in a "small" conference. The mural outside the Odyssey Center is now completed!! If you are in Asheville, NC, you must go see this work of art.
This 10' by 20' mural was constructed by Kathy Triplett and Alex Irvine. It is located on Clingman Avenue, Ashevillle, NC.
"Clingman" is wading through water ( the basis for all pottery) and gripping a coffee mug ( used and made by most every potter ). Stop in to the Clingman Cafe which is next door and visit The River District (home of numerous artists with open studios). |

It is with sadness , we learned of Malcom Davis' passing this weekend. He truly pioneered the use of shino glazes and carbon trapping.
Here is his red shino ( cone 10 reduction ) glaze that works so well under glazes with a wax resist. ( apply thin )

One of my former teachers suggested a home show as the "first" step in marketing my work.
I just completed another successful home show and sale. It has proved to be a wonderful way to let family, friends, co- workers, etc. , view and purchase pottery.
I now have people asking when the next show will take place. Many people do their Christmas shopping at these shows and enjoy talking with the artist while sipping wine, enjoying refreshments, and seeing friends in a relaxed setting. |
